Because of the very narrow limits on the pH, temperature, blood pressure, respiration, heart rate and other vital signs necessary for humans to keep alive, our entire existence is predicated on our body's ability to fight to stay out of equilibrium with our environment (homeostasis). Coming into equilibrium with our environment means we have died.
